What game mechanic looked stupid until you actually tried it

  • Characters

Some games sell you on a gimmick that sounds like absolute bullshit on paper. Then you play it and realize it's the whole reason the game works.

Could be a stamina wheel that made you think they were just slowing you down for no reason. Could be a card system in an action game. Could be a cooking mechanic that felt like busywork until it saved your ass in a boss fight. Sometimes the thing that makes you roll your eyes in the trailer ends up being the thing you can't imagine the game without.

I've seen people dismiss entire games because one system sounded tedious. Then they pick it up on sale six months later and can't shut up about how wrong they were. Happens more than you'd think.

Stamina wheels always felt like a pain until I realized they force you to actually think about pacing instead of just mashing buttons like a maniac. It turns a simple run-and-gun into a tactical dance, which sounds like a drag but makes fights way more engaging. Also, those cooking or crafting minigames that seem like filler? Sometimes theyโ€™re the difference between wiping on a boss or barely scraping through. Itโ€™s funny how the stuff that looks like busywork often ends up being the secret sauce. Anyone else had a moment where a gimmick totally flipped their opinion on a game? That is the part people usually skip because .

Tiny detail, big damn difference.

The swinging mechanic in the Spiderman games, when I first seen it I thought it was the classic 'ads always better than the gameplay.' I didnt think it'd be so smooth but they did an awesome job.
