Transphobia Explained... (What Is Your Experience?)

Featured Replies

Never understood transphobia. My first boyfriend/girlfriend was trans, I'll never forget the absolute fear in their eyes as they told me and begged me not to say anything because they were about to go into the military. No one should be that scared just to be themselves. Can report a happy ending though, they used their military money to transition and now they're living happily in their own body.

I completely agree it's some kind of compensating self hate. Also just a big ass case of people not knowing how to mind their own business, the internet has made everyone think they're entitled to some kind of input on everyone else's lives.

I think there has been so much like injustice with the media towards trans people. Like that whole thing with drag queens reading books to **** or whatever. (I understand it’s not the same) but like the majority of drag queens would never wanna preform in front of *****ren. And big drag queens came out to speak against this. But the media pushed that that is how all drag queens are so even Nashville banned drag. It’s unbanned now. But it was banned for a little.

With trans it’s the same, they just share all of the detransition stories. And like anything bad that a transgender person did is pushed out and made to seem that’s how they all are. When in reality most transgender people are TOTALLY cool and just wanna be themselves. I see transgender people work at the grocery store near me in my smaller town. And I always make sure to be extra kind because I know out here they probably definitely get a hard time with the boomers and bigots. Especially because out here sometimes it’s not even safe to transition.

Some of my family members are transphobic/homophobic. I actually don’t know any trans people personally and I’ve maybe only seen one trans person in my town. I don’t think there’s many where I live but I know some of my family is transphobic because of comments they made.

I think transphobia exists because those people don’t understand being trans and they read or hear ignorant things from other transphobic people. It also comes down to their religious beliefs. I’m a Christian but I don’t hate on that community. Christianity shouldn’t be about hating and judging others.

It says in the Bible that Christian’s shouldn’t shun people from the church or judge because it keeps people away from god and the church. Also a huge misconception is that being gay in the Bible means you should burn in hell. Because that was in the Old Testament and if you were following the old testament with that same logic we should stone woman for cheating. And a ton of other ridiculous things. Christian’s use Gods word out of context to justify their bad doing and that is not a real Christian. You are a true Christian if you are accepting to that stuff because in theory, that’s what God would’ve wanted you to do. Jesus hung out with prostitutes.

I support trans people, I will admit that I find neo pronouns and stuff like that to be ridiculous though.

YES YES! THIS! I feel like more people need to be educated on how harmful neo pronouns are to the LGBT community. I've written essays about it, as a trans man, mind you.

the detransition stories

Mental illness is complex and there are a wide variety of them - like people with personality types who identify as trans only because they have a different mental illness that has nothing to do with transgenderism but rather them just being unhappy with themselves or whatever - it's annoying trans people have to be poorly represented by people who have problems with themselves, and not really with their gender.

Again, there are people with real problems, then there's people who just want to feel special/get attention.

Like I said, the people who hate on transgender people are either secretly attracted to the trans concept, or wish they were brave enough to be trans themselves.

You don't hate an innocent group of people that obsessively unless you secretly hate yourself for your connection to them.

Like how anti-Gay camps are often run by closeted gays. It's just projecting.

"Every accusation is a confession" (in the context of hating innocent groups of people)

It all comes down to the truth that most people want to think as little as possible. I see it with my own mother. Whenever I talk about gender identity, she shuts down. She acts panicked. She does the same when it comes to heavy emotions. She doesn't want to go through the process of understanding.

But she does keep it in her back pocket for when she wants to insult me 🙃

That’s a brutal but accurate take. Most people don’t want to wrestle with complicated emotions or ideas that challenge their worldview—it’s exhausting and scary, so shutting down becomes easier than growing. What sucks is when that shutdown turns into a weapon, like your mom using it to hurt you. It’s a messy mix of fear, ignorance, and laziness, but it doesn’t excuse the damage it causes. People have to want to do better; otherwise, it’s just a cycle of shutdowns and insults. None of that makes it less painful though. That is where the whole thing gets weird as shit.
